Zac Gallen Making Penultimate Spring Start Against Guardians

The Diamondbacks Ace has two more chances to get ready for opening day

Zac Gallen will be making his penultimate spring training start today for the Diamondbacks against the Cleveland Guardians. Game time at Salt River Fields is 1:10 P.M. The game will be broadcast on 98.7 F.M. radio

For Gallen this will be just his third official Cactus League game. He also had a back field simulation game in between his previous two outings.  He has not been especially sharp to date. In six innings of work he has faced 31 batters and walked seven while striking out just two. He's also given up eight hits and seven runs.  He will have an opportunity to get dialed in today however as the Guardians are playing a split squad game and their lineup is comprised of mostly reserves and non roster invitees.

While manager Torey Lovullo has not yet made it official, Gallen is the presumptive opening day starter. After this game he lines up for one more spring start on either March 23rd or 24th, and then for the opener in Los Angeles on March 30th against the Dodgers.

Other pitchers scheduled to appear for the D-backs today are Jeurys Familiar, Scott McGough, Kevin Ginkel, and Miguel Castro.

The Guardians starter today is right hander Cal Quantrill, who went 15-5 with a 3.38 ERA in 32 starts, 186 innings last year. He is also making his third Cactus League start, and has only pitched 3.1 innings so far.

Fans at the ballpark will get a chance to see future stars Corbin Carroll and Gabriel Moreno.  Carroll  is batting .345 this spring, with four doubles and two triples. He also has eight walks against five strikeouts, with a .486 OBP in 37 plate appearances.  Moreno only has 19 plate appearances, but is batting .412  on 7-17,  with a double and two homers already.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was a late scratch today, and was replaced by Caleb Roberts.  Late scratches and lineup changes have been a trend all spring, but especially over the last week or so.

Christian Walker is back in the lineup after missing several games due to a right hip contusion from a hit by pitch.  Evan Longoria  had also been missing games due to various bumps and bruises, is back in at DH.
