In this story:

Jose Fernandez had a major league debut for the ages Tuesday night, slugging the Diamondbacks to a 7-5 come-from-behind victory over the Detroit Tigers. He hit two homers and drove in four runs while collecting three hits in a stunning display from the 22-year-old rookie.

Inserted into the lineup in place of Nolan Arenado by Torey Lovullo, Fernandez showed he belongs right out of the gate in the most dramatic fashion possible. He became the first D-backs player to hit multiple homers in his debut, and the seventh in modern MLB history to do so.

"What a good moment for this team, for this organization," Lovullo said postgame on the D-backs.TV broadcast.

"[Fernandez] deserves all this credit, and we're so proud of him. He's a player that came through our system, through our academy, and it's just a great story. It's a great baseball story. We've known about Jose for a long time. We knew he was coming."

Fernandez Wastes No Time Getting First Hit and Homer

Fernandez singled in his very first major league at-bat. It was not an impressive hit by any means. Rather it was a topper down the third base line, but the athletic Fernandez beat the throw and had his first base hit in the books.

But two innings later, he showed the kind of bat speed and ability to impact the baseball that has scouts and Diamondbacks coaches all in on his ability to handle major league pitching right now.

A lightening quick swing of 79 MPH produced a 408 foot bullet to the left field bleachers for Fernandez's first major league home run.

Fernadez Comes Through with the Game Winner

Fernandez struck out in his third at bat, but then with two on and two out in the eight, the sensational rookie got a 92 MPH cutter up and in from Kenley Jansen. Fernandez blasted the pitch 409 feet to left-center field to provide the winning margin.

"Thankful for the opportunity," Fernandez said through translator Alex Arpiza on the D-backs.TV postgame broadcast. "I'm here to help out my team. ... I was ready. They just told me to stay ready. Glory to God that I was able to be successful."

Fernandez said his first phone call would be to his parents.

"I know they're waiting for me by the phone for me to call them," he said.

Brandon Pfaadt provided six innings that included a third inning meltdown in which he allowed five runs on six hits. But he righted his ship to throw three more scoreless innings. Andrew Hoffmann threw two scoreless and Paul Sewald had a clean inning in the ninth to lock down the save.

Corbin Carroll had another big hit, a two-run double in the six run eighth for the D-backs.

Fernandez's Path to the Majors

Fernandez broke out in 2025 at Double-A by hitting .272 with 17 homers and 80 RBI. He did that after not homering in his first 19 games.

And he also did that while logging 894 innings at shortstop and another 77 at third base. Long limbed and rangy, Fernandez is 6-foot-3 and inaccurately listed at 165 pounds. In fact he's filled out and put on at least 20 pounds after a workout and diet regimen designed to increase his power.

Fernandez hit .280 in spring training, with three doubles, a triple, and three homers. He registered extremely high exit velocity as he banged the baseball all over the Cactus League ballparks. It was no wonder then that they turned to Fernandez when the injury bug struck.

Lovullo has expressed confidence in the young Venezuelan's ability to man third, short, or second base. He might even see sometime at DH during this stint in the majors. Just how long he'll be here is not yet clear. A lot depends on when Smith can come off the injured list. But for now, Fernandez is a promising major leaguer who has justified the team's faith in calling him up.
