The D-backs won the first game 3-0 behind Zac Gallen's pitching and a timely homer from Christian Walker. Merrill Kelly matched up with Corbin Burnes last night, throwing six no-hit innings. But a leadoff homer by Willy Adames in the 7th opened the flood gates as the Brewers scored seven runs over the final three innings in a 7-1 victory.
Pitching Matchup
Drey Jameson RHP, (2-0, 2.16 ERA, 8.1 IP) is making his first start of the year. After losing out to Ryne Nelson in the fifth starter competition during spring training, Jameson was given a bullpen role to start the season. He excelled in that role and seemed headed towards a high leverage reliever role. But an oblique injury to Zach Davies pushed Jameson back into a starter's role.
Last year Jameson made four starts and posted a 1.47 ERA in 24 innings. He throws both a 95 MPH sinker and a 97 MPH four seam fastball, and has an excellent slider.
Janson Junk, RHP, is making his first appearance of the year. Originally Brandon Woodruff was supposed to make this start but he was placed on the 15 day injured list with shoulder inflammation. The 27 year old Junk throws primarily a high spin rate fastball at 93 MPH and a slider, mixing in an occasional curveball and changeup. He's only made six starts in his career over the last two years, with a 4.74 ERA in 24 innings.
LINEUPS
Jose Herrera is making his 4th start of the year behind the plate. All three of his prior starts have also come in day games. There are only two right hand batters in the lineup for Arizona today, Christian Walker and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Three switch hitters and four left hand batters will give the D-backs the platoon advantage in the early going. In his brief MLB career Junk has an OPS against 100 points higher against left hand batters, and 65 points higher in the minor leagues in 2022.
