D-backs at Braves Preview:  Davies to IL, Mantiply Recalled

The Diamondbacks and Braves will go at it again today at 4:20 P.M. MST, 7:20 EST in Truist Park, Atlanta. Last night the two teams had a knock down drag out slugfest with the D-backs emerging victorious 16-13.  If you're not sure how to watch today's game, make sure to see all your Channel Options Here

ROSTER MOVE

Prior to today's game Joe Mantiply was recalled from Triple-A Reno and Zach Davies was placed on the 15 day IL with lower back inflammation. There had been no prior indication that Davies was dealing with an injury, but his recent performance has been very poor. He allowed 9 runs in yesterday's game and has a 7.38 ERA in 12 starts this season.

Pitching Matchup

Ryne Nelson RHP , 5-5, 4.98 ERA, 4.67 FIP

Nelson had a bounce back outing of sorts against Toronto on July 14th, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing just two runs, one earned, despite giving up nine hits. In his prior outing he gave up seven runs to the Mets in just three innings, also giving up nine hits. It's hard to guess what you'll get with Nelson in this up and down rookie season.  He took a loss against the Braves on June 3rd, giving up three runs in 4.2 innings. There have been bright moments and rough spots for hims this season.  He's made all 19 of his starts though and given the team 99.1 innings.

Charlie Morton RHP, 10-6, 3.20 ERA, 3.72 FIP

Morton continues to be one of the better pitchers in the league at age 39.  He's been hot lately, giving up just one run in his last three starts, pitching 19 innings.  Since his career renaissance began in 2017 with the Astros in his age 33 season he's gone 80-33 with a 3.50 ERA and 122 ERA+.   The D-backs beat him on June 2nd at Chase Field when he was out dueled by Merrill Kelly in 3-2 loss.

Lineups

The D-backs will need to keep their hot hitting from last night going. They broke out of hitting slump that saw them average just 2.9 runs over a 14 game stretch before breaking out last night with 16.  Look for last night's hero, Christian Walker to stay hot. He is 3-for-7 with a homer and a double against Morton in his career.

Eddie Rosario is back in the lineup today to face a team he tortured in that series back in June. He went 6-for-13 with three homers, a triple, and seven RBI in the three game series at Chase Field.  Sam Hilliard, who came out of last night's game was placed on the IL with a heel contusion.

Bullpens:

With Mantiply back that gives Torey Lovullo some extra left-hand coverage in the pen while Andrew Chafin is on Paternity leave. Both bullpens were taxed last night due to short outings by their starters. The Braves used five relievers, and had to call up Seth Elledge to provide some coverage. Lucas Luetge and Colin McHugh did not pitch last night.
