Torey Lovullo Gives Diamondbacks Injury Updates

As the injuries mount, roster depth is being tested

Torey Lovullo gave detailed injury updates for several players prior to Monday evenings game against the New York Yankees. The team has experienced a spate of injuries over the last 10 days that are starting to mount.

Alek Thomas, Left Hamstring Strain: The Diamondbacks starting centerfielder was placed on the 10-day injured list one day after coming out of a game after running out a groundball. He has what was described as a "high Grade 1 strain", which is another way to say he has a small tear. There is no time table for his return at this stage. Rookie Jorge Barrosa was called up to replace him.

Randall Grichuk, Right Ankle Surgery to Remove Bone Spurs: Grichuk is moving forward with his minor league rehab and nearing his return. On Sunday he played seven innings in centerfield and had five at bats. Monday is an off day on the Reno schedule. Grichuk will play right field on Tuesday. His likely return is going to be the series in Colorado against the Rockies April 8-10. Jake McCarthy is playing right field Monday night and will continue to get playing time at least until Grichuk returns.

Eduardo Rodriguez, Left Lat Strain: Rodriguez played catch out to 120 feet on Monday. He will likely play catch again on Wednesday, and if all goes well a bullpen by Friday. He is reported to be pain-free.

Jordan Montgomery, Late sign, getting ramped up in Triple-A: Montgomery threw 50 pitches in a three inning simulation game at Salt River Fields Monday. He is scheduled to pitch in a rehab game for the Reno Aces on April 7th, with a target for four innings, 65 pitches. The team is targeting April 19th for his return. Tommy Henry and Ryne Nelson are in the rotation until both Rodriguez and Montgomery can join the team around the third week of April.

Paul Sewald, Grade 2 Oblique strain: Sewald is still in the rest and treatment phase and has not begun throwing. Kevin Ginkel has been getting the ninth inning to start the season.

The Diamondbacks roster depth is helping them weather this storm, for now. Lovullo addressed the importance of roster depth in his press conference.

"We have been talking about depth here from day one. Usually it's always centered around starting pitching but you can see what's happened to us in years past. Not so much last year but the years prior to that where we took on some injuries and we dug deep into the system and the players probably weren't as ready as they could have been. "
