Dodgers News: Freddie Freeman Appreciates Being Mentioned Alongside Franchise Royalty

The Dodgers now just need to win eight games until they officially clinch the NL West division title, which would be their 10th in the last 11 years.
During Friday night's win over the Washington Nationals, Freddie Freeman hit his 53rd double of the season, extending his lead to 15. In the process, the former Atlanta Brave broke a franchise record that was set almost 100 years ago. Johnny Frederick held the previous record, hitting 52 doubles in the 1929 season.
“This franchise has been around for a very long time. A lot of winning seasons. A lot of great players have come through here,” Freeman said. “So just to be able to be mentioned with some of these guys I’m climbing the leaderboard on, it’s pretty cool. It’s been a wonderful two years so far, so hopefully I can just keep re-breaking it for the next couple weeks.”

Freeman has a chance to become the first player to have 60 doubles in a season since Joe Medwick and Charlie Gehringer did so in 1936. Freeman has 22 more games to accomplish the feat.
“It’s a pretty incredible statistic,” manager Dave Roberts said. “But it’s his ability to post, not give away at-bats and I really like that it was a leg double because there are some doubles you kind of cruise into first base, but there’s 10 to 12 doubles of those 53 that he’s legged out and that’s thinking two out of the box and that sort of exemplifies how he plays the game.”

The 33-year-old first baseman is having a monster season. With a .336 batting average, Freeman could continue to boast a career batting average of over .300. Ty Cobb leads the major leagues with a .366 career batting average.
“I’ve always wanted to hit .300,” said Freeman. “So if I hit .300 and play the games like I normally do, I think overall the numbers will be there at the end of the year. Obviously last year I set my career-high in doubles and re-did it this year."

Freeman has been one of the most consistent hitters in the major leagues this season. He has only gone three consecutive games without a hit three times in 2023.
“I’ve been swinging the bat really well pretty much all season long, consistently have been pretty good," Freeman said. "So that’s what I’m more happy about is that when I do slump a little bit I end it real fast and get back on the right side of things.”
