REPORT: Cubs’ Andy Green Interviews For Guardians' Manager Position

The Chicago Cubs' bench coach joins the list of candidates being considered for Cleveland's manager vacancy.

After the Cleveland Guardians reportedly had a second interview with Stephen Vogt for their manager position yesterday, another candidate has interviewed with the team.

According to The Athletic senior baseball writer Ken Rosenthal, “[Chicago] Cubs bench coach Andy Green has interviewed for the Guardians’ manager job.”

As a player, Green was a 20th round pick in the 2000 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He played a combined 140 career Major League games with Arizona and the New York Mets, hitting .200 with 46 hits, two home runs, 12 RBI, and seven doubles in four seasons.

He then began his MLB coaching career in Arizona’s Minor League system, eventually becoming the manager of their rookie level team in June of 2011. In his three full seasons as a Minor League manager, Green totaled a 199-153 record, including winning the 2012 Pioneer League Championship with the Missoula Osprey.

After serving as Arizona’s third base coach in 2015, he became the manager of the San Diego Padres for the 2016 season.

Green held this position until September 21st, 2019, compiling a 274-366 record in nearly four full seasons. He then became the Chicago Cubs’ bench coach in 2020, which remains his current role.

Green joins a handful of candidates Cleveland is currently considering to replace future Hall-of-Fame manager Terry Francona.

These candidates include: Vogt, Clayton McCullough, Craig Albernaz, Carlos Mendoza, Chris Valaika, John McDonald, and Rob Cerfolio.

The Guardians continue their managerial search with competition from a few other teams.

San Diego most recently joined the list of MLB teams with a manager vacancy, as former manager Bob Melvin was recently introduced as the San Francisco Giants’ new manager.

The Houston Astros will also likely have an opening, as future Hall-of-Fame manager Dusty Baker is reportedly set to retire.
