New York Mets Sign 20 International Prospects

The New York Mets also snagged three Top 50 prospects and the son of a Hall-of-Fame slugger.

The New York Mets formally announced the signing of 20 international players on Monday, including a set of prospects that were previously reported.

It’s a huge class for the Mets, who had $5.295 million to spend internationally and managed to sign three Top 50 prospects.

The most notable name is Vladi Miguel Guerrero, the son of Vladimir Guerrero Sr. and the half-brother of current Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. But Vladi Miguel Guerrero will only get a $117,000 deal, per MLB Pipeline.

The Mets did not release the terms of any of their contracts.

“We are excited to welcome this year’s international signing class to our organization,” said Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns via a team release. “These players and their families have worked hard to get to this day, and we look forward to supporting them as they continue pursuing their dreams to be Major League players.”

The prospects were from all over Latin America, with a heavy emphasis on the Dominican Republic, where the Mets tapped 14 of their 20 signees.

The most significant prospect signed on Monday is a future catcher in Yovanny Rodriguez. Signing Rodriguez required a reported $.285 million. MLB Pipeline rated the Venezuelan-born Rodriguez as the No. 6 overall international prospect.

MLB Pipeline scouts are also high on Dominican Republic shortstop Edward Lantigua, who was also a Top 50 prospect and received a reported $950,000 bonus. The other Top 50 prospect was another Dominican Republic shortstop, Yensi Rivas.

The complete signing class is below. The Mets can continue to sign international prospects through Dec. 15.
