New York Mets Need Daniel Vogelbach To Build Off Monday's Performance

The powerful left-handed hitter rocked his first home run of the campaign in New York's 8-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

When the Mets acquired designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach from the Pittsburgh Pirates last summer, they got two things: a powerful hitter who could get on base.

So far this year, Vogelbach has had no problem drawing the free pass, as is reflected in his .394 on-base percentage, but the power hasn't been there.

At least, of course, until Monday night.

In the opening game of a three game set at Chavez Ravine against the Dodgers, Vogelbach took flamethrower Dustin May deep in the second inning with one on for his first long ball of the year.

Vogelbach, 30, makes his living in feasting off right-handed pitchers. He did just that Monday, as he also chipped in another RBI in the fourth inning.

For the Mets, they will need Vogelbach to build off this performance to help a lineup that has mostly been starved of power outside of first baseman Pete Alonso.

Brett Baty should also help in that department, as the Mets promoted the young third baseman on Monday when Tim Locastro went on the injured list with back spasms.

Vogelbach cranked 18 homers last year between the Pirates and Mets to go along with a .238/.360/.433 triple slash, a 128 wRC+ and .349 wOBA.

While Vogelbach is mostly limited to facing righties, should he mash them, it would give New York some comfort in one half of their DH position.

The team also has Mark Vientos and Ronny Mauricio waiting in the wings who could help supplement Vogelbach from the other side of the plate perhaps soon, but for now, it's important for the veteran to hone in on what makes him successful.
