Padres News: Friars Bullpen Did Not Use Rain Delay as Excuse for Sunday Loss

In this story:
The San Diego Padres were able to get some huge contributions from numerous pieces all weekend as they were able to win a huge series at Coors Field. Prior to that, they were facing a number of obstacles such as Xander Bogaerts dealing with some nagging wrist pain, an on and off pitching rotation, and a number of rollercoaster games behind them.
However, a slew of roster moves and excellent play from the Padres' batting lineup allowed San Diego to take home two out of three wins against the Colorado Rockies and improve to a 31-34 record. They still have a ways to go to seriously place themselves back into the NL West race but seeing Juan Soto continue some excellent play and Manny Machado putting together some MVP performances, the organization should be quite happy right now.
But it would've been quite nice for the Friars to cap off their week on Sunday with a third straight win against the Rockies. Unfortunately, the combination of Blake Snell taking a hit right to the ankle, an 85-minute rain delay, and some shaky bullpen performances all led to them falling 5-4.

Blake Snell made it very clear that he wanted to finish out the rest of the game despite his ankle ballooning up but team manager Bob Melvin was not about to allow him to do so. One the rain delay was over, the Rockies were able to connect on yet another homer and come out with the victory.
But the Friars' relievers were not about to use the rain delay as an excuse for their loss and Tom Cosgrove was the first to speak on the matters.
“I’ve pitched in rain before,” Cosgrove said. “I’ve pitched good in rain before. I don’t think that had too much to do with it. … It was a bad pitch; he hit it out.”

Melvin also touched on how they need to do better moving forward.
“The way we’ve been playing, we feel like we’re back, situationally, to doing some good things,” Melvin said. “We just didn’t finish it out, and obviously the state of our bullpen had a little something to do with it.”
