Padres Roundup: Casey Mize Injury Update, Joe Musgrove Setback, Blockbuster Trade Link

In this story:
The San Diego Padres beat the Minnesota Twins, 7-5, on Saturday evening and improved to 70-60 on the year.
Heading into the bottom half of the third inning, the Friars found themselves in a 3-0 hole before Jackson Merrill started the scoring with a solo home run to center field. After the deficit grew to 5-1, it was Merrill once again in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to continue the rally.
The very next inning, the Padres took the lead thanks to a Jake Cronenworth double that scored two runs, an error after a Manny Machado grounder into a fielder's choice and a Ty France single. A Fernando Tatis Jr. RBI single in the ninth was the cherry on top on the road to win No. 70.
Right-hander Casey Mize pitched just 2.2 innings and allowed four earned runs (and three home runs) in the process. He unfortunately left the game early due to what the team later called a right ankle sprain.

In more pitching news that is less-than-ideal, Joe Musgrove suffered a minor setback amid his progressions to make his 2026 debut. The right-hander revealed that a "tweak in the gym" caused him to slow things down after his most recent rehab start in which he hit 97 mph, a mark he has not reached since 2017.
Finally, the trade deadline that passed in early-August certainly hasn't stopped speculation on future deals that the Padres may make. With the catcher position still a somewhat weaker point for the Friars, they have been linked to a blockbuster deal this offseason that would put an All-Star behind the dish.
The lack of production from Padres backstops this season (although they've been much better as of late) has also generated more talk on perhaps promoting top prospect Ethan Salas amid his recent success after being promoted to Triple-A. The young catcher is hitting .338 across 18 games with 20 RBIs, three home runs and an OPS of 1.001.
