What are the Odds the Phillies Sign Bryant?

What are the odds the Philadelphia Phillies sign former NL MVP Kris Bryant?
Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

With the MLB lockout in full force teams are unable to make any Major League transactions. We already covered what we thought of the few moves the Philadelphia Phillies made ahead of the Dec. 1 deadline, but now eyes are turned towards what will happen once the lockout ends.

It is possible that another spending spree unlike the sport has ever seen occurs again, and if does, then the Phillies should be in on the second round. One potential fit is that of free agent Kris Bryant.

The former longtime Chicago Cub was traded to the San Francisco Giants this past July as part of an unloading movement by the Cubs. Bryant has played third base, centerfield, left field, right field, and can play first base.

The 2016 World Champion Bryant offers veteran leadership and stability at a number of positions of need for Philadelphia. The slugger is also a great option for the middle-of-the-order bat that President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski is seeking to add to the roster.

There is of course the connection with 2021 National League MVP Bryce Harper that comes into play as both played on the same Little League team in Las Vegas, NV growing up. It would be poetic for Bryant to provide protection to Harper in the lineup for seasons to come.

However, multiple teams will be coveting Bryant's services considering his versatility and 2021 slashline of .265/.353/.481 with 25 homeruns. Spotrac has his market value around six years at $141,000,000. At about $23.5 million a year, the Phillies should be able to afford adding him to the roster.

Considering the rumored interest in slugger Kyle Schwarber, among others, this is only a guess at the chances at signing Bryant. But with his versatility, fit, cost, and familiarity with players already on the club, the chances the Phillies sign Bryant has to be around 30%.
