MLB Releases Surprising Preseason Texas Rangers Farm System Ranking

MLB.com has just released their latest farm system ranking for around the league ahead of Opening Day.

It's that time of year again when MLB system farm rankings are being released by just about every outlet. One of the more respected lists comes from MLB.com. It is the list that most will refer to when looking at top-100 prospect rankings and organizational rankings.

MLB.com's preseason rankings were released on Thursday and have the Texas Rangers listed seventh out of the 30 teams. It is a bit of a surprise ranking considering how well the Rangers have worked at bolstering their farm over the last five-plus years.

However, MLB's Jim Callis does point out that aside from Joey Gallo and Martin Pérez, the team has not developed an All-Star since 2004. Prospects with high ceilings are great for rankings, but few have reached the MLB ranks and produced at the highest levels.

However, the caveat to that, as Callis points out, is that with all of the talent the farm has now, especially in rookie third baseman Josh Jung, that could be about to change.

Jung, Evan Carter, Owen White, Luisangel Acuña, Jack Leiter, and Brock Porter, lead the way for Texas in terms of top organizational talent. All could be expected to see MLB time as soon as next season, while third baseman Jung is already positioned to be the Opening Day starter.

This time last year the Rangers were ranked ninth on this same list and rose to sixth by the midseason point. After some solid additions and breakout spring performances, it is surprising to see Texas slip one spot to seven.

Regardless, the Rangers still boast one of the strongest farms in the game as they head into their window of contention. It's a powerful tool and vital for any team trying to pursue a World Series championship.
