Starters Set as Team USA, Japan Battle for WBC Supremacy

The 2023 World Baseball Classic returned after a six-year absence. Follow updates on the WBC right here.

The World Baseball Classic is back after a six-year wait. With an expanded field of 20 teams, the United States will attempt to defend its 2017 title.

March 21: The winner between Team USA and Japan can lay claim to being the premier country in the history of the WBC.

The WBC championship is Tuesday night at LoanDepot Park in Miami. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT with TV coverage on FOX.

Japan is going for its third WBC title, winning the first two international events in 2006 and ’09. The Americans, who won the last WBC in 2017, would tie Japan for overall titles with a victory, while also getting a head-to-head bragging rights.

Team USA is starting journeyman Merrill Kelly of the Arizona Diamondbacks, while Japan counters with Shota Imanaga. Both bullpens will figure prominently, as starters are limited to a max of about 65 pitches.

Japanese star Shohei Ohtani indicted he’ll be available to pitch in relief. Ohtani, who ignited the ninth-inning rally against Mexico, is hitting a robust .450 during the WBC.

The Americans slugged their way into the finals, racking up a combined 23 runs and 29 hits in wins over Venezuela and Cuban in the last two rounds. Trea Turner has three home runs and eight RBI in that span. Mike Trout is hitting .318 for the tournament.

March 21: It’s the matchup the world is dying to see: Shohei Ohtani vs. Mike Trout.

“Anytime you get to play against a lineup like they have and a team that they have, it’s going to draw a crowd, but for it to be Team USA vs. Japan and then, obviously, Trout vs. Ohtani, I think that’s special,” said Japan outfielder Lars Nootbaar, who also plays for the St. Louis Cardinals.

“It’s two countries that love baseball that are all going to be watching. So we’re looking forward to it. We’ve got a resilient bunch, so we just can’t wait for that opportunity.”

Japan rallied to beat Mexico 6-5 with two runs in the bottom of the ninth Monday night, with Ohtani igniting the rally. Up next is Team USA led by Trout, Ohtani’s Los Angeles Angels teammate.

The WBC championship game is Tuesday night (6 p.m. CT) at Miami’s LoanDepot Stadium. Ohtani is not expected to start on the mound, but plans to be available to pitch in relief.

Former Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish could get the start for Japan.

March 20: Shohei Ohtani and Japan rallied beat Mexico 6-5 Monday night in Miami to advance to the World Baseball Classic championship against Team USA.

The WBC title game is Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT at LoanDepot Park.

Japan is looking for its third WBC title, winning the first two events in 2006 and '09. Japan scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth after training 3-0 and 5-3 earlier in the game.

Ohtani started the game-deciding rally by doubling to open the bottom of the ninth. Masataka Yoshida walked (Ukyo Shuto pinch ran) and Munetaka Murakami doubled to deep left-center to drive home the winning runs.

Team USA looks to defend its title after the WBC's six-year absence. The Americans go into the championship extremely hot, having scored 23 runs in their last two games.

"They're swinging the bats good, they're having fun being around each other, they're passing the baton, they're not having selfish ABs, constant pressure," Team USA manager Mark DeRosa said of his hitters.

Trea Turner has three home runs in the those two games, including a go-ahead grand slam in the 9-7 quarterfinal victory over Venezuela.

"I'm blown away by the way these guys control the strike zone," DeRosa said. "Trea Turner's in the zone right now, hitting everything he sees. So just like I said, able to get everybody in there, have some fun, relax and let the pitchers do their thing."

March 19: Team USA followed up its come-from-behind victory over Venezuela to rout Cuba 14-2 on Sunday to clinch a berth in the World Baseball Classic championship game.

Trea Turner came up big once again for Team USA. The day after his eighth-inning grand slam led to a 9-7, Turner hit two more long balls and drove in four runs.

The Americans will play the winner of Monday's Mexico-Japan semifinal. The final is Tuesday at 6 p.m. at LoanDepot Park in Miami.

March 18: Team USA's Trea Turner hit a grand slam in the eighth inning to put the Americans in the lead for good in a 9-7 win over Venezuela on Saturday night in Miami.

Team USA now faces Cuba on Sunday in the first semifinal game. Mexico faces Japan in the other semifinal on Monday.

Texas Rangers pitcher Martin Perez started for Venezuela and was unable to get out of the first inning. But his team did rally to take the lead before Turner's heroics.

The grand slam was Turner's only hit of the game.

March 17: Mexico defeated Puerto Rico, 5-4, on Friday night to become the third team to clinch a berth in the World Baseball Classic semifinals, which start on Sunday.

Puerto Rico led off the game by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. But, eventually, Mexico rallied, as a three-run seventh inning put it in the for good.

The only remaining quarterfinal is Venezuela against the United States on Saturday.

March 16: Japan became the second team to punch its ticket for the semifinals of the World Baseball Classic, defeated Italy, 9-3.
