Rangers Fall to Rockies on Late Homer

The Texas Rangers threw seven shutout innings before Colorado scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth.

The Texas Rangers lost to the Colorado Rockies, 4-1, on Monday in Pima, Ariz. Here’s a breakdown of the game.

Rockies 4, Rangers 1

How the Rangers Lost: The Rockies overcame a 1-0 Rangers lead with a four-run eighth inning.

Records: Colorado, 5-5; Texas, 6-6.

Winning pitcher: Jeff Criswell (COL, 1-1).

Losing pitcher: Kyle Cody (TEX, 0-1).

Save: Fernando Abad (COL, 1).

Rangers at the plate: The Rangers were limited to just six hits, and for most of the game that was enough.

The Rangers’ only run of the game came in the top of the fourth when shortstop Corey Seager hit a 453-foot home run.

The other five Rangers with hits in the game were Nathaniel Lowe, Joe McCarthy, Jonah Heim, Josh Jung and Robbie Grossman.

Rangers catcher Sam Huff returned after a few days off due to a minor injury. But the Rangers lost center fielder Leody Taveras for the next two weeks to an oblique injury. He was scratched before Sunday’s game.

Rangers on the mound: For the first six innings, Rangers pitching was on it. Andrew Heaney went three innings and allowed just two hits, striking out four and walking one. He handed it to Glenn Otto, who no-hit the Rockies for the next three innings while allowing two walks and striking out one.

Ian Kennedy pitched a scoreless seventh, but the Rockies got to reliever Kyle Cody for four runs in the eighth. He gave up two hits and a walk while striking out one. Aaron Schunk hit his first Spring Training home run, a three-run shot, to put the Rockies in control.

The Rangers scratched Spencer Howard due to arm fatigue. He’ll take the next few days off, but it is not considered serious.
