Rangers Drop Both Split-Squad Games in Spring Training

The Texas Rangers lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Surprise and to the San Diego Padres on the road on Wednesday.

The Texas Rangers lost both of their split-squad games on Wednesday in Surprise, Ariz. Here’s a breakdown of both games.

Dodgers 4, Rangers 2 (7 Innings)

How the Rangers lost: Mookie Betts and Jason Heyward homered for the Dodgers.

Records: Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-2; Texas, 3-3.

Winning pitcher: Dustin May (LAD, 1-0).

Losing pitcher: Andrew Heaney (TEX, 0-1).

Rangers at the plate: Outfielder Adolis García had a double, a triple, a walk and an RBI in the game. He was the only Rangers batter with two hits. The only other RBI came from Blaine Crim, who pinch-hit for Nathaniel Lowe and homered in the seventh.

Rangers on the mound: Andrew Heaney’s first outing of the spring led to a 1 2/3 inning outing, as he gave up three hits, two runs, two walks and struck out two. Jonathan Hernández and Dominic Leone each gave up a run in one-inning relief stints. Cole Ragans, Jacob Barnes and Chase Lee each pitched an inning of scoreless relief, with Ragans and Barnes striking out two each.

Padres 5, Rangers 1 (7 Innings)

How the Rangers lost: The Padres jumped on the Rangers for three runs in the second inning and former Rangers slugger Nelson Cruz hit a solo home run for San Diego.

Records: San Diego Padres, 4-2; Texas, 3-3.

Winning pitcher: Nick Martinez (SDP, 1-0).

Losing pitcher: Glenn Otto (TEX, 0-1).

Rangers at the plate: The Rangers had just four hits in the game, with outfielder Clint Frazier the only Rangers hitter with two hits. Jonah Heim’s solo home run in the seventh accounted for the only Rangers run in the game.

Rangers on the mound: Glenn Otto didn’t get out of the second inning, giving up three hits, three runs, two walks and striking out three before Jake Latz came on in relief. He threw 2 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and a run while striking out two. Spencer Howard was the only other Rangers pitcher, giving up a run and a hit while striking out two and walking one in two innings.
