Tekoah Roby wrapped up his April for Double-A Frisco as he struck out eight hitters in the RoughRiders’ 5-1 win at Amarillo on Thursday.

Roby, the Texas Rangers’ No. 11 prospect per MLB.com, was coming off a four-inning start against Arkansas last week in which he took his second loss of the season.

While Roby didn’t put up a quality start in terms of innings, he went five innings, giving up one earned run, four hits and a walk. He earned his first win of the season and allowed the fewest runs in any start so far. His strikeouts was also a season high for 2023.

It wraps up a four-start April for Roby, who went 1-2 with a 5.79 ERA. But in 18 2/3 innings he struck out 25 and allowed just six walks.

Before the Amarillo start, Roby allowed three or four runs in each start, but kept his walks down. He didn’t allow a walk against San Antonio on April 15.

Roby is coming off a 2022 season in which he went 3-11 with a 4.64 ERA in 22 games (21 starts). He threw a career-high 104 2/3 innings, walked 35 and struck out 126. Batters hit .239 against him.

The Rangers selected Roby in the third round of the 2020 MLB draft. He excelled in instructional league and in 2021 he had a 2.45 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 22 innings as a 19-year-old in Low-A before getting shut down in mid-June with a sprained elbow.
