Rangers Promote Logan O’Hoppe, Designate Jarred Kelenic for Assignment

In this story:
The Rangers the Texas Rangers decided not to wait until rosters expanded on Sept. 1 to call up one of their hottest hitters from Triple-A Round Rock.
On Sunday the Rangers promoted catcher Logan O’Hoppe from Round Rock to bolster an offense that has struggled this week at home. The move was first reported by Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News (subscription required). The Rangers also sesignated outfielder Jarred Kelenic for assignment.
Texas also needed an additional bat in the short term after first baseman Jake Burger was hit in the left wrist with a pitch on Saturday. X-rays were negative but the hand experienced significant swelling, which required him to leave the game. He told reporters on Sunday that he felt he was available to play.
Logan O’Hoppe’s Short Rangers Tenure

O’Hoppe, once considered on the of the game’s top catching prospects, was part of a deadline dead between the Rangers and Angels in July. Texas received reliever Chase Silseth and O’Hoppe for minor league infielder Angel Arredondo.
The questions about O’Hoppe are about his defense. But with the Express his bat has been exceptional. In 18 games he slashed .292/.386/.556 with three home runs and 20 RBI. He left Saturday’s game in the fifth inning after going 0-for-2 with no explanation. Scott Lucas, who covers the Rangers’ minor league system, reported that he was unable to see O’Hoppe in the handshake line after the Express won the game.
O’Hoppe joined the Angels in 2022 as part of a deadline deal with the Philadelphia Phillies and made his MLB debut shortly after that. His best offense season was in 2024 when he slashed .244/.303/.409 with 20 home runs and 56 RBI. His power remained in 2025 (19 home runs and 43 RBI) but his slash fell to .213/.258/.371. Before he joined the Rangers this season, he was slashing .209/.271/.295 with four home runs and 23 RBI with the Angels.
The Rangers don't have much flexibility with O’Hoppe. He has only played catcher in his career but has spent 18 games as a designated hitter. Texas can't use him in any other position so for now it will carry three catchers, including Danny Jansen and Elias Diaz, both of which are better defensive options and have more of a rapport with the pitching staff.
But the Rangers have scored eight runs in their last five games and have somehow won three of them. They need all the offense they can get and that's why O’Hoppe is in Arlington for the first time this season.
