Red Sox Duo Reportedly Look Like 'Clear Non-Tender' Candidates For Boston
The Boston Red Sox have some decisions to make this week.
The Major League Baseball non-tender deadline is set to pass on Friday. Clubs will either need to tender a contract to their arbitration-eligible players or non-tender tender them leading them to free agency. Boston has a handful of players it will need to make decisions on but it sounds like second baseman Luis Urías and catcher Reese McGuire could end up being let go, according to MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo on the Fenway Rundown podcast.
"Luis Urías, the second baseman, I think he looks like a clear non-tender candidate at $4.7 million," Cotillo said. "Reese McGuire, backup catcher, I think we've talked about that before. It seems like there may be a chance if they want to upgrade in that spot. So maybe one of those guys are the move today to get ahead of Friday's moves.
It wouldn't be too surprising to see either Urías or McGuire be non-tendered ahead of the deadline. Boston acquired Urías in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers and he struggled across 32 games. He slashed .225/.361/.337 with two home runs and 13 RBIs. He is projected to earn $4.7 million, which likely is more than Boston is willing to spend.
McGuire was acquired by the Red Sox in a trade with the Chicago White Sox in 2022 and actually has been solid with Boston. The 28-year-old has appeared in 108 games total with the Red Sox over the last two seasons and has hit four home runs, driven in 28 runs, and slashed .291/.333/.407.
Boston has until Friday to make the final decision on Urías and McGuire's future with the team.
