Red Sox Linked To Star Pitcher, Slugger In Possible Blockbuster Trade

Could the Red Sox actually end up landing one of the best young pitchers in baseball?

The Boston Red Sox need to make a major splash this offseason and one insider proposed a very intriguing blockbuster trade.

Boston needs to add to its starting rotation this offseason and could also use another right-handed bat in the lineup. With Justin Turner expected to leave the club this offseason, the Red Sox will need to fill the designated hitter position. WEEI's Rob Bradford linked the Red Sox to the Chicago White Sox in a blockbuster trade for starting pitcher Dylan Cease and slugger Eloy Jimenez to help solve the club's issues.

"The Red Sox need no-doubt-about-it top of the rotation starters. At least one, anyway. That's why Dylan Cease's name has come up," Bradford said Cease, it would seem, is available in a trade from the White Sox for the right price. The problem for teams drooling over the 27-year-old is that price figures to be fairly steep. While Cease's numbers in 2023 took a turn for the worse (4.58 ERA in 32 starts) after finishing second in the American League Cy Young Award balloting, there were enough signs that the righty is a pitcher a rotation can be built around.

"Red Sox get: Dylan Cease (pitcher), Eloy Jimenez (outfielder/designated hitter) White Sox get: Jarren Duran (outfielder), Nick Yorke (second baseman), and Luis Perales (pitcher). The reasoning for including Jimenez is the Red Sox need for right-handed pop at both the outfield and DH spots, along with the White Sox getting out from under the $13 million that is owed the 27-year-old in 2024."

Boston has been linked to Cease on multiple occasions this offseason and at this point it seems like he likely will be traded. Chicago looks like it is entering a full-on rebuild and trading Cease and Jimenez away would bring back a solid return. If this ends up being a possible move, the Red Sox should jump on it without a doubt.
