Red Sox Reportedly Showing Interest In Acquiring Yankees Star In Possible Blockbuster

Boston reportedly could look into landing a Yankees star in a blockbuster trade

The Boston Red Sox could end up making a very surprising move this offseason.

Boston has made it known that it is looking for a new second baseman and has been linked to a few players already, like All-Star Whit Merrifield. It sounds like he may not be the only option the club is considering and the Red Sox even may look into acquiring New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres, according to WEEI's Rob Bradford.

"According to major league sources, the Red Sox identified Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres as a trade target last season - with (Alex Verdugo) being of interest to New York," Bradford said. "It appears the teams might very well be looping back on that conversation this offseason.

"Torres is viewed by some in the Red Sox organization as an excellent fit, offering the kind of stability at second base the team didn't possess in 2023. The 26-year-old has one more year of arbitration eligibility, predicted to make just more than $14 million in 2024."

Torres would be an intriguing option, to say the least. New York has shown interest in acquiring Verdugo so maybe a one-for-one swap could make sense. The Red Sox have a surplus of outfielders and need a second baseman. The Yankees have a surplus of infielders and need a new outfielder. A swap makes sense but any deal involving both the Red Sox and Yankees would be surprising.

It's not surprising that the Red Sox like Torres. The two-time All-Star arguably was the best offensive second baseman in the American League in 2023. He launched 25 home runs and drove in 68 runs to go along with an impressive .273/.347/.453 slash line. He would be a significant upgrade over what the Red Sox currently have.

While a trade between the Red Sox and Yankees would be surprising, it's not unheard of. A move makes sense for both teams. Maybe we will end up seeing one this offseason.
