Red Sox Top Prospect Smashes Two Monster Home Runs; Could Promotion Be Coming?

Boston's top prospect is tearing it up right now

The Boston Red Sox certainly have a bright future.

Boston has surprised people so far this season and has been better than expected. Although the club has lost three games in a row, the Red Sox still are three games above .500 and should get even better as sluggers Adam Duvall and Trevor Story eventually return to the lineup.

The Red Sox should be even better shortly as the club's top prospects begin making their way to the big leagues. The one player Red Sox Nation certainly is keeping its eyes on is shortstop Marcelo Mayer and he isn't disappointing.

Mayer has been tearing it up this season with the High-A Greenville Drive and through 30 games is slashing .312/.387/.576 to go along with seven home runs and 29 RBIs. The young shortstop has collected 39 hits already this season and scored 22 runs for the Drive. Mayer is red-hot at the plate right now and even slugged two home runs in the Drive's 9-0 win over the Rome Braves on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old likely is at least one year away from making his way to the big leagues, but if he continues to hit at this rate, a promotion could be coming shortly. Mayer has shown that he can impress at the High-A level so a promotion to the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs certainly could be in the cards this season. If he was able to continue to shine, there even is a chance he could make it all the way up to the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox before the end of the season.

Mayer without a doubt is the future of the shortstop position for the Red Sox. Boston likely will take all precautions with Mayer so it doesn't rush him to the big leagues, but the young shortstop clearly has shown that he may be ready to take another step.
