Red Sox Hold On To Intriguing Infielder After Recent DFA; Could He Be Back In Majors Soon?

One Red Sox defensive stud officially isn't going anywhere

The Boston Red Sox officially are holding on to a defensive stud. 

Boston recently designated infielder Yu Chang for assignment to make room on the big active roster for shortstop Trevor Story but it appears as though he's not going anywhere. The Red Sox announced that Chang was outrighted to the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox on Friday afternoon.

"The Red Sox today outrighted (infielder) Yu Chang to Triple-A Worcester," the club announced on Twitter.

The fact that Chang will remain in the Red Sox system should be a welcomed sight to Boston fans. Chang joined the Red Sox after being claimed off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays towards the end of the 2022 campaign and has remained with the club since. The 27-year-old appeared in 11 games with the Red Sox in 2022 and so far has made 39 appearances this season. 

Chang struggled offensively for the Red Sox and slashed .162/.200/.352 to go along with six home runs and 18 RBIs but provided a much-needed stable glove at shortstop. Before Chang was promoted to be the club's starting shortstop the position was manned by Enrique Hernández, who led the league errors from shortstop at one point. 

If the Red Sox were to call Chang back up again this season, the club would have to make a move to the 40-man roster. A move certainly is unlikely at this time, but if injuries pile up, he could return to the big leagues. Boston already has dealt with a plethora of injuries so it wouldn't be too surprising to see others at this point. At the very least, the fact that Chang will remain in the organization at least will give the club more minor-league veteran depth.
