What Will Red Sox Do At Trade Deadline? Boston's Plan Reportedly Becoming More Clear

In this story:
The Boston Red Sox certainly are in an intriguing spot.
Boston currently is in last place in the American League East at 40-42 but is just five games back of an American League Wild Card spot. With just about a month to go until the August 1 trade deadline, the Red Sox will have to decide what they will do. Boston realistically could make up some ground in the Wild Card standings if it could string together some wins. Plus, the team should improve shortly with Trevor Story expected to come back at some point this summer and Chris Sale receiving positive news Thursday.
Still, the Red Sox are below .500 over halfway through the season. Boston isn't so far out of it to become full-on sellers, but would that make sense? The next few weeks truly will make that decision for them, but at this point, it sounds like the club plans to add, according to MassLive.com's Sean McAdam.
"Saturday is July 1," McAdam said. "In exactly a month, it will be trade deadline time. The arrival of that date on the calendar means some teams will have to make some agonizing decisions — buy, sell, or stand still. The Red Sox are among those who may need to make that call. Already, there’s the general feeling within the organization that the team expects to be in a position to add to its roster, with the hope of aiding and abetting a bid for a postseason spot.
"Assuming the team doesn’t fall way out of contention over the next four weeks, team president and CEO Sam Kennedy said the Sox envision entrusting chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom to determine the team’s approach at the deadline."
Boston could use another starting pitcher sooner rather than later with Sale and Tanner Houck both on the injured list. The Red Sox also could use some middle infield help, although Story should give the club a boost. Also, although the Red Sox's bullpen is improved this season, they could use another arm in the bullpen for depth.
With a month to go until the deadline, there are sure to be plenty of rumors. Plus, the Red Sox have some intriguing veteran pieces that could help fill in some of the holes on the club's roster through trade. Red Sox Nation will have to keep an extremely close eye on the club over the next few weeks.
