Yankees Reportedly Will Pursue Reunion With Rising Star This Offseason In Free Agency

Should the Yankees actually consider a reunion in New York this offseason?

The New York Yankees could end up having a reunion this offseason.

New York will be scouring the market as the club looks to improve and make its way back to the postseason. After winning 82 games in 2023 there certainly is room for growth. The Yankees have plenty of talent but all of the pieces didn't go together this season. Injuries are a massive reason for this, but there still needs to be improvements made on the roster.

The starting rotation needs to be where the club looks to make moves first, along with adding a little more pop to the lineup. One player the club reportedly will pursue is current Texas Rangers and former Yankees hurler Jordan Montgomery, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.

"Starter Jordan Montgomery’s stock has risen sharply with his stellar performance since joining the Rangers and should be in line for a fat payday with his former teams, the (St. Louis Cardinals) and Yankees, expected to pursue him.

"Montgomery has been the Rangers’ best starting pitcher since after acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline, yielding a team-best 2.79 ERA and team-leading 67 2/3 innings."

Montgomery has been floated as a possible target for the Yankees a few times over the last month or so and it seems like those rumors will be continuing. The big lefty was drafted by the Yankees and spent the first five-and-a-half seasons of his career with the club before being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2022. Montgomery has been excellent this season with St. Louis and also the Texas Rangers after being traded once again. Overall, Montgomery compiled a 3.20 in 32 starts this season with St. Louis and Texas. Plus, the 30-year-old has been excellent for Texas so far in the postseason.

The big lefty is the perfect pitcher for the Yankees to target. He is just getting better each year and won't cost as much as someone like Aaron Nola. If the Yankees could land Montgomery, they would be able to spend money elsewhere, like for Orix Buffaloes ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto or Chicago Cubs star Cody Bellinger. A move certainly makes sense.
