Yankees Linked To Ex-Cardinals Stud As Possible Offseason Rotation Boost

One former member of the Cardinals could be pursued by the Yankees this offseason

This upcoming offseason is going to be pretty wild.

The 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline wasn't as active as in past years because more teams than ever are fighting for postseason spots. An extra playoff spot was added in both the American and National Leagues so there were fewer sellers to go around. Although this was the case, there's expected to be plenty of movement this offseason.

The St. Louis Cardinals ultimately were one of the few sellers ahead of the trade deadline but will be very active this offseason, especially in the starting pitching market. St. Louis traded away lefty Jordan Montgomery but there have been some rumblings it could have interest in a reunion. Even though this is the case, there's sure to be plenty of competition for Montgomery's services and one team that could be in the mix is the New York Yankees, according to SNY's John Harper.

"If the Yankees get (Cody Bellinger), (Hal Steinbrenner) is almost certainly not doing another long-term mega-deal with a pitcher like (Yoshinobu Yamamoto)," Harper said. "Not when he’s already locked into big bucks for (Gerrit Cole), (Aaron Judge), Giancarlo Stanton, DJ LeMahieu, and Carlos Rodón. So why not (Jordan Montgomery), the lefty they traded for Harrison Bader in 2022? He’s an ideal fit behind Cole and Rodón (assuming he figures it out next year), coming off his age-30 season in which he pitched to a 3.20 ERA in 32 starts for the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers."

Harper released his list of 10 bold predictions for the offseason and linked Montgomery to the Yankees. This isn't the first time a reunion between the two sides has been mentioned. Montgomery began his big league career with New York in 2017 and remained with the club until he was traded to St. Louis in 2022 for outfielder Harrison Bader. The big lefty has since impressed with St. Louis and Texas and likely will receive a solid new contract this offseason.
