Here's an idea from the former Yankee captain.

Now serving as a broadcaster for FOX Sports alongside Alex Rodriguez and David Ortiz, former New York Yankees Hall of Fame shortstop Derek Jeter had a trade suggestion for his former team after the All-Star Game on Tuesday night.

During a segment called “Trade You Would Like to See Happen,” Jeter said the Yankees should be looking towards the National League West for help on offense, granted the San Diego Padres don't turn around their season.

“I do believe the San Diego Padres could get hot and really make some waves in the National League West,” said Jeter, who was the Marlins co-owner and CEO in between being a Yankees player and FOX broadcaster.
“But if they don’t, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Yankees go out and get Juan Soto. You don’t know how long Judge is going to be out, they need some offense, I think it makes sense.”

Jeter told Rodriguez that he'd play Soto in left or right field.

Soto is having another superb season, making the All-Star team, and slashing .265/.419/.479 with 15 home runs. That said, the Padres are 43-47 and on the outside looking in at a playoff spot.

While Soto might make sense for the Yankees, given the injury to Judge, he is going to cost a boat load of prospects in return. The Padres acquired Soto from the Washington Nationals at last year's trade deadline in a blockbuster deal that sent several top prospects to D.C., including MacKenzie Gore, CJ Abrams and James Wood III in exchange for the superstar outfielder.

Soto will be a free agent after the 2024 season, which means his price tag will remain high for a season and a half of control.

Judge has been out since June 3 with a toe injury and there is no timetable for his return. However, it is unlikely that the Yankees will be able to strike a deal for Soto this summer.
