From a superstar running a dogfighting ring to a coach illegally videotaping another team's hand signals, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has handled nearly every problem he's faced smoothly and without much complaint. And that makes his decision to have The Who play halftime at this year's Super Bowl that much more head scratching. The band's guitarist Pete Townshend spent five years on a national registry of sex offenders in England after being arrested in 2003 for accessing a child-porn website in 1999. (At the time, Townshend admitted to viewing child pornography online but said he did so only as research for a book.) Postcard advisories have been sent to 1,500 homes and several schools close to the stadium warning citizens of Townshend's appearance. For the life of me, I can't figure out why the NFL didn't just scrap The Who and go with another nostalgia act such as Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, The Police or even Bon Jovi. Instead, they are fighting all this bad publicity. Bad move, Commish.

Not So Quick Tangent

This has not a good day for several athletes: Rams running back Steven Jackson has been accused of beating up his pregnant girlfriend, Niners conerback Eric Green is being sued for $10 million for forcibly sodomizing a transgender New Yorker, and pro wrestlers Gregory Helms and Chris Jericho were arrested at a Kentucky Shell gas station for public intoxication.

While I applaud Jimmy's decision to make Julie Bowen yesterday's Lovely Lady of the Day, it's unfair to highlight an actress from Modern Family and not mention the lovely Sofia Vergara. Please accept our apologies for the oversight.
