A significant knee injury may stall what remains of Terrell Owens' career. [Owens], who has placed himself among the NFL's all-time leading receivers with plans to play a 16th season, has undergone surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in one of his knees following a previously undisclosed injury this offseason, according to sources familiar with the injury. Owens, 37, was unavailable for comment but sources said the surgery by noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews occurred within the past month. One source said Owens was hurt while on site taping a television show for VH1. Another source said Owens tore the ACL during a personal workout but other sources could not confirm the cause of injury. (ESPN.com)Comment
The Heat may again be warming up to Eddy Curry. A source familiar with the situation confirmed Sunday to the Sun Sentinel that veteran center Eddy Curry has been working with the Miami Heat in recent days, as the Heat look at free-agent options. By league rules, teams cannot currently work out free agents who finished the season on an NBA roster. Workouts of those types of free agents cannot begin until July 1, when a lockout is expected to be imposed, shutting down all league activity. Curry was waived by the Minnesota Timberwolves on March 1. In ensuing weeks he worked out for several NBA teams, including the Heat, in a bid to secure a place on a playoff roster. Mike Quade began his Sunday by sending in his All-Star picks, hoping Starlin Castro would make the National League roster. But a few hours later, Quade had to take Castro aside and tell him that a lack of hustle will not be tolerated. While there's no question Castro has proven he's All-Star material in his first full season in the majors, he still has a few things to learn about playing all out for nine innings, no matter the situation. The play in question occurred during the first inning of Sunday's 6-3 loss, when Castro dove for a grounder up the middle by the Royals' Alex Gordon. Castro then lay on the ground after the ball got past him, making Reed Johnson run in from center field to pick it up. ... "It better not happen again, and he knows it," Quade said.
