2012 American Cup
On Saturday, March 3, the top gymnasts in the world competed at the American Cup at Madison Square Garden. On the women's side, 16-year-old Jordyn Wieber captured the all-around title, besting Alexandra Raisman by 0.2 points. On the men's side, Florida native Danell Leyva took the all-around title with a score of 90.664.
Alexandra Raisman competes in the uneven bars. She earned a 14.333, the second-best score of the day behind Jordyn Wieber's 14.833.
A poor handstand pirouette threated to derail Jordyn Wieber's uneven bars routine, but she managed to hang on and avoid a full-point deduction.
Alexandra Raisman received a 16.100 for this performance on the vault. It tied Jordyn Wieber for the high score of the day.
Jordyn Wieber began her gold-medal winning day with this 16.100 performance on the vault.
Though she wasn't eligible for the all-around title, Gabrielle Douglas finished the day with 61.299 points, 0.2 higher than gold medalist Jordyn Wieber.
"It feels amazing to win my third American Cup," Jordyn Wieber said after the competition. "I'm really excited to get started with the Olympic year."
Bronx, N.Y., native John Orozco finished fifth overall, earning a 15.766 for this performance on the vault.
John Orozco notched a meet-high score of 15.500 on the parallel bars and ended his day with a 15.366 performance on the high bar, second to only Danell Leyva's 15.933.
Trailing the leader entering his high bar routine, Danell Leyva needed a stellar performance to take the all-around title. ...
... Leyva delivered that performance, scoring a 15.933 to rise from fourth and slip past Mykola Kuksenkov of Ukraine. ...
... Leyva needed a pick-me-up. Two weeks ago, the reigning parallel bars champ received 80 stitches after one of his dogs took a swipe at him. ...
... The American Cup gold medalist is fine now, especially following a high-bar performance that included four catch-and-release moves and a double-twisting double layout. ...
... Even though he's a Florida native, Leyva understood the significance of winning gold in Madison Square Garden. "Being the AT&T American Cup champion is amazing," Leyva said. "It's great to be on that list with people like Blaine Wilson, Jonathan Horton and Paul Hamm -- and to say it was in the Garden is even better."
After Leyva took the all-around title, his coach, Yin Alvarez, played the role of energetic cheerleader.
