Kenyan Joseph Gitau wins Fukuoka marathon

FUKUOKA, Japan (AP) -- Joseph Gitau of Kenya won the Fukuoka International Marathon on Sunday for his first victory at the distance.

The 24-year-old Gitau, who is based in Japan, opened up a 13-second lead with 3 miles left and crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 6 minutes, 58 seconds.

Hiroyuki Horibata of Japan was second in 2:08:24, while Poland's Henryk Szost was third in 2:08:42.

Haile Gebrselassie, who won this race in 2006, was among the leaders but retired with about 6 miles left.
