Did You See That?
The boy in the bubble
Welcome to another poppin' installment of <italics>Did You See That?</italics>, the exotic gallery that just floated in from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Australian Open action
Jerzy Janowiczin was shvitzing, so he thought he'd take a spritzing during Day 4 of the great big tennis event in Melbourne.
Chan Hao-ching
It was hot at the Australian Open. How hot was it? Please proceed to the next frame ...
St. Anthony's Day
Smoked horsemeat was on the menu in honor of the patron saint of animals (who seems to have taken the day off). On the eve of Saint Anthony's Day, many folks ride their horses through the narrow cobblestone streets of San Bartolome (near Madrid, Spain) during the "Luminarias." It's a tradition that dates back 500 years and it's meant to purify (some might say <italics>season </italics>is a more apt word) the critters with the smoke of bonfires and protect them (counterintuitive, no?) for the year ahead.
Australian Open
Meanwhile, temperatures of 120 degrees at the big tennis event in Melbourne caused some folks to hallucinate a mixed triples event featuring Patrick Star (no relation to Patrick McEnroe), Victoria Azarenka, and a humble kitchen sponge who goes by the name of Bob and prefers square pants to no pants. (See next frame.)
No Trousers Tube Ride
This rather bawdy-sounding event is part of the "Global No Pants Subway Ride" where people board trains in the middle of winter without trousers and act as if nothing is amiss. This here charming scene was captured as an underground passed through King's Cross station in London on January 12.
European Figure Skating Championships
Luxembourg's Fleur Maxwell got all bent out of shape during her short program in Budapest.
Islamic congregation prep
Continuing in our somewhat disorienting vein, here we have a Bangladeshi Muslim volunteer working on a jute tent (kind of like a jute joint, just without the jute box) before the big shindig on the banks of the Turag River.
Smucker's Skating Spectacular
Ashley Wagner was a shadow of herself after the U.S. Figure Skating Championships at TD Garden in Boston.
Hannah Kearney
The U.S. Olympic mogul gold medalist tuned up for Sochi by laying the lumber on some wildlife at Colorado's Wolf Creek Ski Area. Her daring drill was captured in a video for a popular brand of beverage.
Jallikattu action
One brave soul takes the bull by the horns while another tries to get over the hump in Alanganallor, India. For your information, <italics>Jallikattu</italics> is an ancient, heroic (some rational individuals might question the use of that word) taming sport that the Tamils play during the harvest festival of Pongal.
Cristian Ronaldo and Pele
Kids these days ... The bestowal of the FIFA Balloon d'Or 2013 World Footballer of the Year award on Mr. Ronaldo was crashed by a wily street urchin (see if you can spot him) who reportedly made off with the soccer star's billfold and Pele's pocket watch during the gala evening in Zurich.
Cricket action
Dimuth Karunaratne was converted from baritone to soprano during the dramatic second test match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
A truly sweet model walked the runway at COEX Hall in Seoul, South Korea, during an event that was apparently dreamed up by the renowned designer Willy Wonka.
Sydney International action
After sending Bernard Tomic down to defeat in the final, Juan Martin del Potro drew a hearty round of applause from tennis legend Ken Rosewall with this rather undignified attempt to raise the spoils of victory.
Dakar Rally
Carlos Sainz of Spain and co-pilot Timo Gottschalk of Germany attempt a shortcut to Ganzhou, China during the tenth stage of the thrilling race, which happened to take place in Chile.
Jack
You probably don't know Jack, so we're free to tell you that he's canine who created the "dog paddle" -- with help from his owner -- and here they are navigating the not quite bounding main off Barra de Tijuca beach in Rio de Janeiro. The pair were preparing for an upcoming canine-human pairs competition.
Tennis fans
Why God created medicated sprays and powders ... And on that purely puerlie note, we bid you farewell until next week's insult to your intelligence and more delicate sensibilities.
