Brain on Sports: NCAA basketball coach and psychologist John Tauer

Monday November 16th, 2015

“This is Your Brain on Sports” is a weekly podcast from Sports Illustrated in which SI executive editor Jon Wertheim and Tufts University psychology professor Sam Sommers explore the intersection of sports and human nature—what the world of sports has to teach us about who we are, what we care about and the forces that shape our behavior.

On this week’s episode, Sommers talks with University of St. Thomas head men's basketball coach and psychology professor John Tauer. At DIII St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., Tauer talks about how his doctorate in psychology affects his coaching and motivation techniques on the court, as well as how his players feel about his psychology class. Tauer is also the author of Why Less Is More for WOSPs (Well-Intentioned, Overinvolved Sports Parents): How to Be the Best Sports Parent You Can Be and he discusses youth sports, parenting and motivation.
