Thanasis Antetokounmpo Needs Surgery for Torn Achilles Tendon, per Report

The elder Antetokounmpo brother faces surgery as he heads into free agency.

Giannis Antetokounmpo isn't the only member of his family making headlines for a leg injury. His brother, Thanasis, has a torn Achilles tendon and is set to undergo surgery.

On Wednesday, Shams Charania reported the oldest Antetokounmpo brother needs surgery to repair the injury. Thanasis has been Giannis's teammate on the Milwaukee Bucks since 2019, and is set to hit free agency this summer.

Antetokounmpo played in 34 games during the 2023-24 season, and averaged 0.9 points, 0.4 rebounds and 0.5 assists in 4.6 minutes per game. In his six-year NBA career he has never averaged double-digit minutes in a season. The 2021-22 campaign was the best of his career when he averaged 3.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.3 blocks and 0.3 steals in 9.9 minutes per game, while shooting 54.7% from the field. He played in 48 contests, starting six.

The 31-year-old was drafted by the New York Knicks with the 51st pick in the 2014 NBA draft, but only saw action in two games with the franchise, both coming during the 2015-16 season. He played for Andorra in the Liga ABC until 2017, then for Panathinaikos in the Greek League for two seasons. He was named the Greek League's Most Spectacular Player in 2018 and 2019 and led his team to two-time Greek League championships. The Bucks scooped him up in the summer of 2019.

Thanasis played three minutes during Milwaukee's final postseason game last week, as the Bucks were eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in six games. Now he enters an uncertain future, with a long recovery ahead of him.
