Sixers guard Nick Young deserves some honorable mention in the "Dunk of the Year" contest for his posterization of Bucks center Larry Sanders on Tuesday.
With a little more than six minutes remaining in the second quarter and the Bucks leading 38-31, Young attacked off the dribble from the top of the key, beating Beno Udrih and turning the corner on John Henson. Once into the paint, Young rose high and threw down over the 6-foot-11 Sanders with such force that he sent himself to the ground and into a somersault on the baseline. Give Young full credit not only for that dismount but for the fact that his poster victim, Sanders, is leading the league with 3.2 blocks per game, despite playing just 24.8 minutes a night.
Earlier this month, Young told The Point Forward about the first dunk of his life, a poster on his brother at a park in Los Angeles.
The summer going into ninth grade. They didn’t think I could do it. It was at the park, playing against the older kids. The first time I had a chance to be out there with them, I just went up there and dunked it. Down in L.A., Robertson Park. It was on my older brother. My brother didn’t think I was going to dunk it. I don’t know what made me jump so high. People started going crazy, I started going crazy because it was my first dunk. I’m yelling at my brother. He was like a park legend. Everyone knew who he was. For me to do that, it was kind of crazy.
Young's dunk would seem to fall just outside the top five of the “Dunk of the Year” conversation, which includes: Kevin Durant over Marcin Gortat,Gerald Henderson over Dwight Howard, Byron Mullens over LaMarcus Aldridge, Jeff Green over Al Jefferson and Harrison Barnes over Nikola Pekovic.
The Bucks defeated the Sixers 110-102 at the Bradley Center. Young finished with 18 points, three rebounds and three assists. Evan Turner had a team-high 23 points, seven assists and six rebounds for Philadelphia. Ersan Ilyasova had a game-high 27 points and 16 rebounds while Brandon Jennings added 25 points and seven assists for Milwaukee. The Bucks improved to 22-18; the Sixers dropped to 17-25.
