NBA warns Bucks' J.J. Redick for flopping

The NBA officially warned Bucks guard J.J. Redick for violating its anti-flopping policy on Thursday.

Redick's flop occurred with a little more than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter of a 109-99 loss to the Thunder in Milwaukee on March 30. Redick pump-faked a three-pointer, getting Derek Fisher in the air, before putting the ball on the ground in an attempt to drive past him. The two players bumped midsections, but Redick flailed his head and arms backwards, exaggerating the seriousness of the contact while earning a defensive foul on Fisher.

This type of flop was specifically called out in the NBA’s official video introducing its flopping policy. In the video, Spurs guard Tony Parker was called out for selling a defensive foul in a similar manner.

"The highlighted offensive player will draw a legitimate defensive foul on the drive," the video's narrator explains. "But he subsequently over-embellishes the contact by flailing his arms and spinning to the floor. This over-embellished reaction is inconsistent with the level of contact and with the direction of the contact."

Redick becomes the 17th player to be warned this season, joining Nuggets forward Danilo Gallinari, Clippers guard Chris Paul, Kings guard Tyreke Evans, Nuggets forward Corey Brewer, Parker, Sixers guard Royal Ivey, Bucks center Gustavo Ayon, Rockets center Omer Asik, Hawks center Zaza Pachulia, Clippers guard Chauncey Billups, Nets forward Gerald Wallace, Kings forward Patrick Patterson, Nets forward Reggie Evans, Thunder guard Kevin Martin, Timberwolves guard J.J. Barea and Cavaliers guard Donald Sloan.

Redick will now be subject to fines if he violates the policy again. The sliding fine scale looks like this.

Violation 2: $5,000 fine

Violation 3: $10,000 fine

Violation 4: $15,000 fine

Violation 5: $30,000 fine

For a sixth (or any subsequent) violation of the rule, the player will be subject to such discipline as the League determines is reasonable under the circumstances, including an increased fine and/or suspension.

Redick, 28, is averaging 14.3 points, 3.9 assists and 2.2 rebounds per game for the Bucks. He is on the books for $6.2 million this season.
