Timberwolves' Dante Cunningham arrested on domestic abuse charge

Timberwolves forward Dante Cunningham was arrested on suspicion of domestic assault in Minnesota on Thursday.

The Star-Tribune reports that Cunningham was booked into jail around 6 a.m. and that he is being held without bail until he is charged.

Police arrived at Cunningham’s residence on Medina Road about 4 a.m. and met with a woman who also lives there who had “marks of a physical domestic [altercation]” on her body,” said Police Chief Ed Belland. The woman did not require medical treatment, the chief added.

Cunningham had left the $1.1 million home before police arrived but soon returned and “was subsequently arrested and taken into custody without incident,” Belland said.

The Timberwolves acknowledged an ongoing situation involving Cunningham in a statement Thursday morning.

“We are aware of the matter involving Dante Cunningham and are in the process of gathering more information," the statement read. "The Minnesota Timberwolves organization takes the matter very seriously and does not condone the type of behavior that is associated with this situation. However, we need to let the legal process run its course, and will have further comment at the appropriate time."

Minnesota is traveling to Miami on Thursday for a Friday night game against the Heat. Cunningham will not travel with the team and his availability is unclear.

Back in 2011, Cunningham was arrested in Pennsylvania after a loaded BB gun, marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia were found in his vehicle after he was pulled over for allegedly speeding and driving recklessly.

Cunningham, 26, is averaging six points and four rebounds in 19.8 minutes per game over 74 appearances this season. He's in the final season of a three-year, $6.3 million contract with the Timberwolves. The 2009 second-round pick holds career averages of 6.1 points and 3.9 rebounds over five seasons with the Blazers, Bobcats, Grizzlies and Timberwolves.
