Dwayne Wade’s cousin was shot and killed in Chicago just one day after he spoke out against gun violence.
Nykea Aldridge, cousin of Chicago Bulls star Dwyane Wade, was shot and killed Friday afternoon on Chicago’s South Side, the guard confirmed on Twitter.
The death comes just one day after Wade participated in an ESPN Undefeated town hall discussion with other athletes and media members about gun violence in the United States.
Aldridge, 32, was pushing a baby in a stroller around 3:30 p.m. when two men approached a man in the vicinity and opened fire. Aldridge was caught in the crossfire and struck in the head and arm, according to police. She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
“[She was] just going to register her kids in school, and bullets that fly around and have no name decided to find its way to her head,” Wade’s mother Jolinda told reporters.
Police are questioning at least one person as they investigate the shooting. A family member took the unharmed child into custody.
Wade has been informed of the death, according to CBS.
