Michael Jordan calls for calm in response to Charlotte protests
Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan released a statement on the situation in Charlotte on Thursday, calling on people to restore calm and unite as a community.
Violent protests have erupted in Charlotte over the past two days in response to the police shooting of 43-year-old black man Keith Lamont Scott. The governor has declared a state of emergency after multiple people, including police officers, have reportedly been injured in the protests. One protester is in critical condition after being shot.
"First, I want to express my condolences to the Scott family for their loss," Jordan said in the statement. "I also wish for a full recovery to those who have been injured.
"In light of the tragic events of the past three days, it is more important than ever that we restore calm and come together, as a community, in peaceful demonstration and conversation, and in constructive and non-violent ways. As part of the fabric of Charlotte, the Hornets organization is committed to working with civic leaders, our elected leaders and law enforcement to foster more trust, transparency and understanding so we can heal and grow together as a community."

The riots have prompted the NFL and Carolina Panthers to discuss safety measures for the Panthers' game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. The NFL said it is planning for the game to proceed as scheduled, but Fox 46 Charlotte reported the league had discussed moving the game out of Bank of America Stadium, which is located in downtown Charlotte.
