With the 2022-2023 regular season soon to be in the rearview, the NBA’s scoring champion is decided. Once again, Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid will finish the year on top in the scoring department after averaging 33 points per game in 66 outings.

Embiid’s status as the league’s scoring champion was decided officially on Friday night. As the big man got the night off with his team facing the Atlanta Hawks, the scoring title could only be broken by Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic.

With the Mavs waiving the white flag on a playoff run, they trotted Doncic out on the court for a 13-minute shift. By finishing with 13 points, Doncic ended the season averaging 32.4 points per game.

By accomplishing the scoring title once more, Embiid becomes the first center to win it back-to-back since Bob McAdoo, who did it for three straight seasons beginning in 1974.

Last year, Embiid finished in front by averaging 30.6 points per game. He shot the ball at a 50 percent clip in 68 games. This year, he leveled up. While putting up 33 points per game, Embiid averaged 55 percent from the field, which marks a new career high.

While the scoring title wasn’t enough of an accomplishment to help Embiid win the MVP award last year, the big man’s argument grew stronger during his 2022-2023 campaign. Perhaps, this time around, Embiid’s career-highs in the shooting and scoring department will help him become the league’s Most Valuable Player this time around.
