Daryl Morey Officially Announces 76ers Signed Kyle Lowry

After clearing the way for new additions, the Philadelphia 76ers have made their first post-trade deadline signing official.

On Tuesday, Sixers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey officially announced the signing of Kyle Lowry. He reunites with the veteran guard for the first time since 2012.

This season, Lowry has appeared in 37 games for the Miami Heat. He was in the midst of his third season down in South Beach, averaging eight points per game while knocking down 39 percent of his threes.

As the Heat looked to add a younger veteran in Terry Rozier, they struck a deal with the Charlotte Hornets, which moved Lowry to the rebuilding franchise. Initially, the Hornets didn’t rule out the possibility of Lowry suiting up and playing, but it was clear that a buyout was likely on the way.

Late last week, now-former Hornets General Manager Mitch Kupchak hinted that the Hornets could move on from Lowry before this past weekend concluded. Shortly after the Sixers defeated the Washington Wizards on the road on Saturday night, Lowry made his departure with the Hornets known — and made it clear his next destination was Philadelphia — where it all started.

While the veteran guard has never played for the Sixers during his NBA career, Lowry was born and raised in the City of Brotherly Love. After starring at Cardinal Dougherty High School, Lowry stuck in the state and attended Villanova for his two-year run in the NCAA. Following his sophomore effort, Lowry became the 24th overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft.

After runs with the Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors, and the Heat, Lowry will add the Sixers to his list of organizations he played for. The Sixers look forward to reuniting the 37-year-old with former Raptors head coach Nick Nurse roughly five years after they won a title together up North.
