What a start to the season it has been for the Philadelphia 76ers’ duo of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
Following the Sixers’ opening week, the fourth-year guard Tyrese Maxey was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week alongside two-time MVP winner Nikola Jokic.
A few weeks later, Joel Embiid joined the club for the first time this season.
On Monday, the NBA announced that Embiid is the Player of the Week for the third week of the season. He acquires the honor alongside Minnesota Timberwolves star guard Anthony Edwards.
During the Sixers’ latest four-game stretch, Embiid averaged 36 points per game. He averaged a double-double, collecting nearly 13 rebounds per game. His improved passing remained on display, as he averaged five assists per game. Defensively, Embiid had two blocks per game.
Although Embiid won the Player of the Week honors for the East, his teammate Maxey was considered a nominee. Maxey’s numbers mirrored the West’s winner, as he averaged 31 points, five rebounds, and eight assists over the latest four-game stretch. Maxey showed some nice flashes on defense as well, averaging one steal and one block per game.
Embiid has now won Player of the Week honors for the 12th time in his career. He holds the second-most Player of the Week mentions in Sixers history, trailing the Hall of Famer Allen Iverson, who has 20.
All season long, Embiid and Maxey have been a dynamic duo. The fourth-year guard has averaged nearly 30 points and seven assists, which both mark a career-high currently. As for Embiid, the reigning MVP is maintaining a high level of play, averaging 32 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists.
While there is plenty of basketball left to be played, Maxey and Embiid are both putting together All-Star campaigns.
