NBA News: Carmelo Anthony Announces Retirement

After spending 19 seasons in the NBA, veteran forward Carmelo Anthony will call it a career.

The future Hall of Famer took to Twitter on Monday to announce that he was officially stepping away from the game of basketball just one season shy of 20 years.

The former third-overall pick joined the Denver Nuggets in 2003. Coming out of Syracuse, Anthony was one of the NBA’s biggest incoming stars, joining the league during the same season as the former first-overall pick, LeBron James.

Anthony lived up to the pre-draft hype during his time in Denver. During his eight-season run with the Nuggets, Anthony averaged 25 points, three assists, and six rebounds. Following his run with the Nuggets, Anthony was traded to the New York Knicks, where he spent the next six seasons.

In 412 games with the Knicks, Anthony averaged 25 points, three rebounds, and seven assists while knocking down 44 percent of his shots.

After a long run with the Knicks, Anthony found himself on several different teams. He started off by playing with the Oklahoma City Thunder for a season. He then pivoted to a ten-game run with the Houston Rockets, which didn’t pan out.

Although the Houston run didn’t last long, Anthony bounced back over the next two seasons by becoming a reliable veteran presence with the Portland Trail Blazers. Lastly, Anthony wrapped up his run with a near-70-game stint with the Los Angeles Lakers last season.

While several teams were linked to Anthony at times as potential suitors to pick him up while he spent time away from the game this year, he remained off the court. As it turns out, Anthony has made the decision to hang up his jersey once and for all.

Anthony leaves the NBA with ten All-Star appearances, two All-NBA Second Team selections, four All-NBA Third Team selections, and an NBA All-Rookie First Team nod. Anthony was also a one-time scoring champion back in 2013 during his third season on the Knicks.
