New York Knicks Acquire Former Sixers Two-Way Veteran

Like many teams across the NBA, the New York Knicks made a few changes to their roster on Saturday. The Philadelphia 76ers’ rival brought on a Philly native to join their roster as a developmental prospect.

Former Sixers’ guard Charlie Brown Jr. will reportedly join the Knicks on a two-way deal, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. He joins Jacob Toppin, taking up one of three two-way slots.

Brown’s amateur hoops career started locally at Saint Joseph’s, where he attended for three seasons. Although Brown was a medical redshirt after his freshman season, he wrapped up his college stint, averaging 19 points, six rebounds, two assists, and one steal per game in 32 outings.

In 2019, Brown went undrafted, but he landed a two-way deal with the Atlanta Hawks. His stint with the Hawks resulted in ten games played at the NBA level and 29 appearances with the College Park Skyhawks.

After his run with the Hawks’ organization, Brown landed with the Minnesota Timberwolves affiliate, the Iowa Wolves. He also had a ten-day run with the Oklahoma City Thunder. In 2021, Brown’s G League rights were traded to the Delaware Blue Coats.

Although he signed a ten-day contract with the Dallas Mavericks in December 2021, Brown remained with the Sixers’ organization, sticking with the Blue Coats and even signing a ten-day contract, followed by a two-way with the 76ers.

While in Philadelphia, Brown appeared in a career-high 19 games at the NBA level. He averaged nine minutes on the floor. He struggled offensively, draining just 27 percent of his field goals and averaging two points per game.

Although he didn’t stick with the Sixers as a two-way prospect beyond the 2021-2022 season, Brown spent the following year playing with the Blue Coats. At the developmental level, Brown contributed to the Blue Coats’ season of success, as they won the NBA G League Finals in 2023.

Showcasing improvements with the Blue Coats last season, Brown will get an opportunity to split time with the New York Knicks and the Westchester Knicks while on a two-way contract for the 2023-2024 NBA season.
