In this story:

For the first time since the 2020 offseason, the Philadelphia 76ers are on the hunt for a new head coach.

When the Sixers wrapped up the seven-year run with Brett Brown in 2020, they started a new chapter with Doc Rivers, who was removed from a seven-year stint as the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers at the time.

During the same season, the Sixers hired Rivers, they also traded for the veteran sharpshooter Danny Green. As many Sixers fans learned during Green’s two seasons in Philadelphia and the years beyond his time rocking a Philadelphia uniform, Green is not one to keep his comments and opinions to himself.

As the host of his own podcast, Inside the Green Room, Green always offers NBA-related commentary on the regular. And recently, Green dished his thoughts on the current state of the head coaching carousel, which involves his former team.

So, who does Danny Green believe the Sixers should take as they look to move on from the Doc Rivers era? The former veteran suggests Daryl Morey and the 76ers’ front office could see their team benefit from hiring former Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams.

“I think Monty can coach Joel (Embiid). We don’t know what’s gonna happen with James Harden. So I think he’s a good fit and a positive attitude. Teach them how to play the right way, unselfish basketball.”

Where do the others fit in, in the eyes of Green? The former Sixer believes that the Phoenix Suns would be best rolling with former Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse.

As for the Milwaukee Bucks, Green thinks that former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Frank Vogel could be the right hire for the Eastern Conference contenders.

One thing all of those coaches have in common is that they are prospects of interest for the 76ers. When Daryl Morey made the call to move on from Rivers, the Sixers were linked to six candidates. Along with Nurse, Williams, and Vogel, the Sixers are expected to target Mike Budenholzer and Mike D’Antoni while considering a possible promotion for their current assistant, Sam Cassell.

So far, the Sixers were rumored to be planning an interview with Nurse soon and have already wrapped up an interview with Vogel. As far as Monty Williams goes, so far, there hasn’t been any traction for a possible Williams hiring in Philadelphia — or any team, for that matter.

According to a report, the Detroit Pistons were targeting Williams, but he wasn’t interested. While many assumed the state of Detroit’s franchise played a part in Williams’ decision, another report hinted that a year off from the game might be in play for Williams.

If that’s the case, then the Sixers and the Bucks will all be crossing Williams off their list, as he was expected to gain attention from the two Eastern Conference contenders. As the Sixers plan to take their time with the search for a new head coach, there is still plenty of time left for circumstances to change. For right now, though, it seems Williams is a long shot to land in Philadelphia.
