The Philadelphia 76ers are currently on the road in Boston for their second-round series against the Boston Celtics. After the shorthanded Sixers took down the Celtics in Game 1 to take a series lead, the team hoped for another win on Tuesday as the NBA announced the MVP winner.

For weeks, it was apparent that Joel Embiid was the frontrunner for the award down the stretch of the regular season. While many assumed Embiid would take home the award, nobody could be so sure.

In the previous two seasons, Embiid was a finalist for MVP but didn’t come out on top. In both years, Embiid was the runner-up, losing out to Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic.

This time around, the tables turned. Jokic came in second, while Embiid will snag the trophy for the first time in his career.

As the NBA officially made the announcement on Tuesday night, Embiid and the Sixers were gathered at the team’s hotel to watch together. And the Sixers’ social team caught the action.

To no surprise, it was an emotional moment for Embiid, who has taken a tough road to get to this point.

Although Embiid’s made it clear that his primary focus is helping the Sixers win an NBA title for the first time in decades, he certainly wanted MVP recognition for his play over the past three regular seasons.

Finally, Embiid will get what he worked for, as he’s now the 2023 NBA MVP.

On Wednesday, Embiid and the Sixers will hold an official press conference in Boston. The presser will be live-streamed at Sixers.com.
