Milwaukee Bucks rise to no. 7 in The Athletic’s NBA Power Rankings

The Milwaukee Bucks’ improved play under new head coach Doc Rivers has not gone unnoticed, as they have risen to no. 8 in the latest NBA Power Rankings of The Athletic. Though Milwaukee’s 3-5 record under Doc leaves much to be desired, the team’s improved attention to detail and defensive activity has them looking like the Bucks team that most NBA teams feared for their defensive intensity.
Small upgrades can make a world of difference
While the Bucks’ trade deadline acquisition of Pat Beverley pales in comparison to what some Eastern Conference squads did to bolster their respective rosters, it still moves the needle for a Milwaukee squad that needs a solid perimeter defender. With the Bucks starting an offensive-minded backcourt of Damian Lillard and Malik Beasley, having Beverley around gives the team a known defender to throw at opposing guards.
“Did the trade deadline serve them well? Small upgrade for the Bucks by getting Patrick Beverley for Cameron Payne, which is a move I like for them quite a bit. Payne wasn’t bad, but he didn’t help any of their problems. Beverley might not be a defender who can impact an entire team defense, but he can help create resistance on the perimeter that hasn’t been there,” Zach Harper wrote.

Infectious energy
It’s not just Beverley’s on-court impact that makes the trade a smart move for the Bucks. His experience and leadership qualities will also be valuable in the locker room. In addition, Bev's toughness and tenacity on defense will rub off on his teammates, helping to elevate their defensive play overall. This is crucial for a team like the Bucks, known for their high-powered offense but often struggle defensively.
