In an era dominated by the three-ball, the Chicago Bulls’ veteran wingman DeMar DeRozan is a throwback to a different time. Although Deebo is known for his mid-range mastery, he has made a conscious effort this season to add the three-point shot to his arsenal.

In an interview with NBC Sports Chicago, DeRozan discussed how he had worked on his three-point shooting during the offseason and how it has translated into his game this season.

Mindful of the three-point opportunities

The last thing a defender expects of DeRozan is for him to square up and take a long-range bomb. After all, it’s not his M.O. However, DeRozan has made it a point to be more mindful of the three-point opportunities that present themselves during games. Being a 15-year vet. DeRozan has seen how the game has evolved and recognizes the importance of adapting to the changing times.

This is not to say that the USC product will start taking ten three-point attempts per game, but he has become more comfortable and confident in his outside shot. To date, Deebo is making one triple per game, the highest mark of his career since his last season in Toronto in 2018.

“It’s definitely something I’m going to be mindful of, but I’m also so much a ‘picking-my-spots’ guy. I might have moments where I’m like, ‘I want to shoot eight or nine 3s a night.’ But I feel so comfortable in the so many positions I’m put in to feature my game,” DeRozan shared.

Taking the right ones

DeRozan is comfortable with his current game. At the same time, he understands the importance of taking the right shots and not forcing anything. He acknowledges that the game has changed, and three-point shooting is becoming more prevalent, but he also knows his strengths and how to use them effectively on the court.

“When the 3 is there, I’m not shy to take the right ones. I’m comfortable in taking them. I’m more conscious of it this year, for sure, because I’m big on doing whatever is asked of me,” DeRozan added.
