Erik Spoelstra On Victor Wembanyama’s Playstyle: “There’s No Real Way To Describe It”

San Antonio Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama handed the Miami Heat their first preseason loss, leading to praise from Heat coach Erik Spoelstra

The Miami Heat were handed their first preseason loss by Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs last week.

In the absence of Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, Wembanyama was the star of the show. He scored 23 points along with 4 rebounds and 4 assists in his 23 minutes on the floor.

Following the performance, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra gave high praise to the No. 1 pick in an interview with Tim Reynolds of AP News.

“We’ve seen the footage, we’ve read about him, we’ve heard what everybody said about him,” Spoelstra said. “But until you actually see it, live, in person, there’s no real way to describe it.”

Wembanyama was regarded as the best prospect since LeBron James in 2003. The 7-foot-4 French big man is expected to become a superstar under the coaching of Greg Popovich. Spoelstra is the second-longest tenured coach with his team behind Popovich, who has more victories than any coach in NBA history.

“I think that’s probably just piquing a great deal of interest,” Spoelstra said. “I mean, Pop is the one of the greatest that’s ever done it. He’s coached a lot of different kinds of teams, a lot of different kinds of players. And I think you want to coach guys that are totally unique.”
