In this story:

Bam Adebayo and the Miami Heat (5-4) are taking on Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs (3-6) on Sunday evening.

Adebayo is coming off a 26-point and 17-rebound performance in a win over the Atlanta Hawks. With star Tyler Herro sidelined, his role in the offense is skyrocketing.

Wembanyama and the Spurs fell short to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday. However, the No. 1 pick shined, recording 29 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks on 57.1 percent shooting.

With uncertainty throughout the Heat’s roster this season, Adebayo is the healthy cornerstone. He could earn his third career All-Star selection if he continues to dominate on the offensive end.

Herro is expected to return in December, but it’s crucial that Miami finds success in his absence. The Heat do not have the ability to replicate their improbable NBA Finals run from last year.

Coach Gregg Popovich is working wonders with the French big man. He is averaging 19.9 points and 8.6 rebounds on 46 percent shooting. The Spurs former No. 1 picks, Tim Duncan and David Robinson, are Hall of Famers. Wembanyama appears to be headed towards the same level of success.

Adebayo is an elite defender, but Wembanyama is making an early case for Defensive Player of the Year. He is averaging 2.6 blocks and 1.1 steals, compared to Adebayo’s 1.6 blocks and 1 steal.

Adebayo limiting Wembanyama on the offensive end is a determining factor in who comes out victorious.
